In the 1970s, Pinky’s mum came across a collection of imported vintage cosmetics at an estate sale in Hastings—deodorant, hair oil, baby powder, toothpaste, and more. These products have “Made in Palestine” on their labels: they are pre-1948. Emblazoned with their point of origin, they are relics of a time before the Nakba, when 750,000 Palestinians were violently expelled from their land. These labels now act as an unmistakable historical admission.

UNERASED: Made in Palestine offers up these found artefacts—as large, glossy photographs and in a display case for closer inspection—as a catalyst for dialogue around Palestine’s history. Seeing “Palestine” proudly printed on these vintage objects is powerful: they assert its ongoing existence by serving as tangible, historical evidence of a land many still try to erase and refuse to officially recognise.

Early products like these speak to the industrial and capitalist dimensions of many settler-colonial projects, including New Zealand. Palestine is “the land of milk and honey”—rich in resources like olive oil, oranges and earth minerals, now claimed by Israel. This exhibition will distribute the pocket-sized Beauty Boycott Zine, highlighting how consumerism contributes to the ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people and the importance of the BDS movement—drawing attention to the corporate conglomerates on the boycott list who are parent companies of so many everyday toiletries.

Alongside the photographs will be a limited edition attar fragrance with notes of olive leaf and watermelon, created by Nathan Taare. Lovingly handcrafted as an act of solidarity, this special scent stands in stark contrast to many luxury perfume brands with entrenched Israeli interests.

Photographs, fragrance and raffle tickets will be for sale online with all proceeds going to Convoys of Good, funding food parcels for families in Gaza.
